The Defence Headquarters has expressed deep shock over the crash of a Nigerian Air Force (NAF) ATR-42 aircraft near the Naval Base in Igbokoda, Ondo State.
The aircraft was on a routine mission from Benin City to Lagos when the mishap occurred, with military personnel and some members of their families on board.
In a statement issued by the Director of Defence Information, Major General Samaila Uba, the Defence Headquarters extended condolences to the families and loved ones of those involved in the crash, as well as the Chief of the Air Staff, Air Marshal Sunday Kelvin Aneke, the Nigerian Air Force and the wider Armed Forces community.
The military described the incident as a painful loss to the nation, noting that its personnel make daily sacrifices in the service of Nigeria.
The Defence Headquarters said, in compliance with the directive of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, an investigation would be conducted to determine the cause of the accident.
It added that search and rescue operations by the Nigerian Air Force, in collaboration with sister services and emergency response agencies, were ongoing at the crash site.
The Armed Forces also assured Nigerians that it would remain committed to its constitutional responsibility of protecting the nation despite the setback.
The Defence Headquarters appealed to the public to refrain from speculation and respect the privacy of affected families while official procedures and investigations continue.
It prayed for the peaceful repose of the departed and strength for their families to bear the loss.
