Nigeria’s counter-terrorism campaign in the North-East has recorded what security experts describe as one of its most significant intelligence breakthroughs in recent months, following the arrest of a suspected foreign ISIS operative after troops of Operation HADIN KAI repelled a failed Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) attack on Cross Kauwa in Kukawa Local Government Area of Borno State.
The arrest, which followed a sustained exploitation operation by Nigerian troops, underscores the growing emphasis on intelligence-driven warfare as the military intensifies efforts to dismantle terrorist networks operating within the Lake Chad Basin.
The sequence of events began when ISWAP fighters launched a coordinated attack on Cross Kauwa. However, troops of Operation HADIN KAI successfully repelled the assault, forcing the insurgents to flee under intense military fire while abandoning critical operational equipment.
Rather than ending the operation after securing the town, troops immediately transitioned into aggressive exploitation missions, pursuing retreating terrorists along their escape routes.
During the search operations, soldiers recovered several high-frequency hand-held radios and other communication devices believed to have been abandoned during the terrorists’ hurried withdrawal.
Security sources said these recovered items proved invaluable, providing fresh intelligence that enabled commanders to widen pursuit operations across the Lake Chad Islands axis toward Abadam Local Government Area.
Technology and Forensics Drive the Hunt
One of the most remarkable aspects of the operation was the role played by modern intelligence exploitation.
According to military sources, investigators had earlier recovered a camcorder belonging to a terrorist media operative killed during the failed Cross Kauwa attack.
The footage extracted from the device reportedly underwent forensic analysis in collaboration with international intelligence partners.
The visual evidence generated fresh leads that ultimately contributed to the identification and tracking of a suspected foreign ISIS-linked operative believed to be of Moroccan origin.
The suspect was eventually intercepted while attempting to flee the operational area.
Why Terrorist Cameramen Matter
Security analysts note that terrorist organisations increasingly deploy media personnel alongside assault teams.
These operatives are responsible for recording attacks for propaganda, recruitment campaigns, operational evaluation and communication with senior leadership.
Capturing or recovering equipment from these media teams often yields intelligence far beyond the immediate battlefield, including identities of fighters, command structures, communication methods, training activities and links with foreign extremist organisations.
In this instance, the recovered camera reportedly became a critical intelligence asset that transformed a tactical victory into a strategic breakthrough.
Military sources said the suspect was immediately airlifted by a Nigerian Air Force helicopter to a secure location for interrogation and intelligence exploitation. They described the arrest as a significant breakthrough in ongoing efforts to dismantle ISWAP’s foreign support network, adding that further details will be released as investigations and operational considerations permit.
