PCRC Honours Pioneer Female Police Officer as Nigerian Police Women Mark 70 Years of Service

The Police Community Relations Committee (PCRC) has honoured one of the pioneering women of the Nigeria Police Force as part of nationwide celebrations marking 70 years of women’s service in the Force.

In a press statement issued by the Director of Global Communications and Media Relations, Olayemi Esan, the event—which took place in Port Harcourt, Rivers State—was described as a key initiative aligned with the vision of the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Egbetokun, to recognise and celebrate trailblazers in policing.

At the ceremony, the National Chairman of the PCRC, Alhaji Ibrahim Mogaji Olaniyan, led national and state executives in presenting a prestigious Award Plaque and financial support to DCP Dame Stella Obuoforibo Okuyiga, KBVM, JP (Rtd.), one of the first 20 women to join the Nigeria Police Force. The recognition highlighted her decades of exemplary service, leadership, and commitment to nation-building.

In his remarks, Alhaji Olaniyan described the 70-year milestone as a celebration of courage, resilience, and the exceptional contributions of female police officers across generations. He noted that honouring DCP Okuyiga was both a privilege and an obligation, acknowledging that pioneers like her broke barriers at a time when opportunities for women in security services were limited. Their sacrifices, he said, paved the way for the progress seen in modern policing.

While presenting the award, the National Chairman commended DCP Okuyiga for her integrity, professionalism, and unwavering dedication to the ideals of the Nigeria Police Force. He reaffirmed the PCRC’s commitment—under the guidance of the IGP—to recognising officers whose legacies continue to inspire the next generation. He also encouraged serving female personnel to draw motivation from the achievements of trailblazers like DCP Okuyiga as they contribute to strengthening community policing and national security.

Several dignitaries were present at the ceremony, including the National Deputy Secretary of the PCRC, Amb. Mary Joseph, and the Rivers State Chairman, Amb. Voke Emore. The event also brought together retired senior female officers such as AIG Barr. Hilda Harrison (Rtd.) and DCP Chief Cecilia Olisa (Rtd.), who joined family members and well-wishers to celebrate the honouree.

DCP Okuyiga received her award in the warm company of her daughter and close relatives, adding a heartfelt touch to an already historic moment. The event concluded with renewed calls for sustained support and empowerment of women in law enforcement, as well as continued acknowledgment of their vital contributions to national development and security.
