Abuja, Nigeria – President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved a significant salary increase for members of the Nigerian Armed Forces, with personnel set to receive pay raises ranging from 30 to 80 per cent, effective September 1, 2026.
The approval, announced in a State House press statement by the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, will benefit approximately 250,000 military personnel across all ranks.
Under the new salary structure, officers above the rank of Colonel—including Brigadier Generals, Major Generals, Lieutenant Generals and Generals—will receive a 30 per cent salary increase.
Personnel from the rank of Colonel down to Warrant Officer will enjoy a 50 per cent increase, while soldiers from Private to Staff Sergeant will receive the highest adjustment of 80 per cent.
The revised remuneration package will increase the Federal Government’s annual salary expenditure on armed forces personnel from ₦660 billion to ₦924 billion.
President Tinubu said the salary review reflects his administration’s commitment to improving the welfare of military personnel in recognition of their sacrifices in tackling terrorism, banditry, kidnapping and other security challenges confronting the nation.
“The men and women who help to keep us safe in our homes must be supported and appreciated in the course of their duties to our nation,” the President said.
He reaffirmed that his administration would continue to prioritise troop welfare while modernising the Armed Forces through the provision of advanced weapons, equipment and technological capabilities to enhance operational effectiveness.
According to the President, national security remains fundamental to Nigeria’s development and prosperity.
“Our administration believes that no nation can achieve greatness without security. We therefore remain resolute in mobilising all military and law enforcement assets to eliminate security threats and protect the lives and property of all Nigerians,” he stated.
President Tinubu urged members of the Armed Forces to see the salary enhancement as a demonstration of the nation’s appreciation for their dedication and patriotism.
“I urge our servicemen to take our gesture as a sign of our deep appreciation of the services they render to our fatherland. Together we shall prevail over the enemies intent on destroying the fabric of our nation,” the President said.
The salary increase is expected to boost morale among military personnel and further strengthen ongoing efforts to enhance the operational readiness and welfare of the Nigerian Armed Forces.
